Rice is high on the glycemic index and low on fiber, and has to be had in an adequate amount to give a feeling of satiety, hence it can increase the overall caloric intake.Having brown rice or black/purple rice is good. Whatever the cereal, the amount consumed is really critical because any cereal or millet if overconsumed can increase caloric intake. When rice is eaten with a an adequate amount of vegetables that are good sources of fibre and proteins- pulses, egg, paneer or curd, it is healthy. One should try to have a higher ratio of whole pulses to rice so that it can lower the glycemic index effectively and can reduce the quantity of rice since one is increasing the fiber and protein content of the meal.
